Position Summary:

PRN -OT Dynamic outpatient, hand therapy opportunity at New Mexico’s only Level 1 trauma center and the state’s premier teaching hospital. The successful applicant can anticipate a caseload composed of 70 – 100% hand patients including a large percentage of post-surgical and traumatic hand injuries. The remaining caseload will be a general O.T. caseload including some patients with neurological injuries. Educational opportunities abound including the opportunity to participate in the Department of Orthopaedics Hand Fellows meetings and provide services alongside hand surgeons in orthopaedic clinics. Many of our therapists also teach in the UNM O.T. and P.T. Therapy educational programs. CHT preferred, however, therapists with hand therapy experience are encouraged to apply and, if selected, will be supported with a strong mentorship program.


Organize and deliver occupational therapy to facilitate rehabilitation of the physically-impaired following disease, injury, or surgical intervention. Direct patient participation in selected tasks to restore, reinforce and enhance performance; facilitate learning of skills and functions necessary for adaptation and productivity. Ensure adherence to Hospitals and departmental policies and procedures. Patient care assignment may include Neonate, Pediatric, Adolescent, Adult and Geriatric age groups.
Accountability:
  • ASSESSMENT - Evaluate patient to determine treatment goals; outline delivery of therapy according to assessed needs

  • THERAPY PLAN - Plan therapy program to include sensorimotor, educational, recreational, and social activities designed to help patients regain physical functions or to adjust to handicaps

  • CONSULTATION - Consult with members of rehabilitative team in therapy delivery; consult with medical staff on patient care

  • THERAPY - Select constructive therapy suited to patient needs

  • EDUCATION - Educate patients on skills and techniques required for participation in therapy program; evaluate progress, attitudes and behavior as related to rehabilitative potential

  • SUPPLIES AND EQUIPMENT - Order supplies and equipment

  • TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT - Clean and repair tools and equipment

  • TRAINING - Conduct or participate in training medical/nursing/ancillary personnel in occupational therapy techniques and objectives

  • DEVICES - Design and fit adaptive devices for patient use

  • DOCUMENTATION - Document patient care activities; process patient billing

  • SUPERVISION - Supervise and instruct occupational therapy students and volunteers as delegated; delegate patient treatment responsibilities to ancillary staff as appropriate

  • CUSTOMER/STAFF RELATIONS - Establish and maintain good rapport and effective working relationships with patients, visitors, physicians and Hospital employees

  • DEVELOPMENT - Enhance professional growth and development through participation in educational programs, reading current literature, attending in-services, meetings and workshops

  • PATIENT SAFETY 1 - Follow patient safety-related policies, procedures and protocols

  • PATIENT SAFETY 2 - Demonstrate proactive approach to patient safety by seeking opportunities to improve patient safety through questioning of current policies and processes

  • PATIENT SAFETY 3 - Identify and report/correct environmental conditions and/or situations that may put a patient at undue risk

  • PATIENT SAFETY 4 - Report potential or actual patient safety concerns, medical errors and/or near misses in a timely manner

  • PATIENT SAFETY 5 - Encourage patients to actively participate in their own care by asking questions and reporting treatment or situations that they don't understand or may "not seem right"

    • Education Requirements:
  • Bachelor's Degree in related discipline

    • Licensure/Certification Requirements:
  • CPR Certification for Healthcare/BLS Providers or for Professional Rescuers or must obtain within 30 calendar days of date of position

  • One of the following:

  • Occupational Therapist New Mexico License with New Mexico Occupational Therapy Practice Board

  • Temporary Occupational Therapist New Mexico License with New Mexico Occupational Therapy Practice Board; Obtain permanent License within three months of position

    • Experience Requirements - Preferred:
  • Bilingual English/Spanish

  • Bilingual English/Keres, Tewa, Tiwa, Towa, Zuni, or Navajo

  • 1 year directly related experience

    • Physical Demands Requirements:
  • Heavy Work: Exerting 50 to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or 25 to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or 10 to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects or people. Physical Demand requirements are in excess of those for Medium Work.

    • Testing Requirements:
  • Tuberculin Skin Test required annually

    • Working Conditions Requirements:
  • Med Haz: Mod exposure to chemicals, dangerous equipment and/or materials requiring basic safety precautions

  • PER DIEM - Satisfy Per Diem program requirements at dept
