The position is responsible for delivering a broad array of health care services throughout the VAMC, and its various locations that provide in-patient care, such as but not limited to living centers. The Health Aid is responsible for performing selected patient/resident related transports to different areas such as, x-rays, CT Scan, MRI, Prosthetics, Sonography and other related areas. The incumbent is expected to develop and demonstrate increasing skills in performing a variety of tasks. Major Duties include, but are not limited to: Lead Duties: Distribute and balances the workload among employees and assures timely accomplishment of the assigned workload. Estimates and reports on expected time of completion of work and maintains records of work accomplishments and time expended and prepares productivity reports as requested. Instructs employees in specific tasks and job techniques, develops SOP's and makes available written instructions, reference materials and supplies Provides on-the-job training to new employees in accordance with established procedures. Monitors working conditions such as seating, ventilation, lighting, safety, etc. Resolves simple, informal complaints of employees and refers others to supervisor. Reports to supervisor on performance, progress, and training needs of employees and behavior problems. Provides information to supervisor as requested concerning promotions, reassignments, recognition of outstanding performance and personnel needs. In-Patient Centered Care Follows proper hand hygiene, universal precautions and general infections control principles. Provides a range of personal care needs such as bathing, toileting, hair and nail care, and dressing in personal clothing while maintaining privacy and dignity of inpatient/resident. Assists as needed with eating, drinking, positioning/turning, ambulating, transferring, and escorting inpatients/residents. Maintains general cleanliness of the inpatient/resident's environment including emptying and cleaning urinals, bed pans, GU bags and suction bottles, and disposing of dirty linen and disposable briefs. Provides clinical support including recording vital signs and reporting deviations to the RN. Promotes skin healing by applying sterile dressings as per facility policy, wound irrigations/packing, ostomy/gastrostomy care. Monitors flow of oxygen, replaces empty tanks, and fills personal use portable oxygen. Escorts inpatients/residents to recreation therapy programs as needed. Educates and assists with various routine procedures; educates and assists as needed with set-up and purpose of treatment supported by auxiliary equipment (such as oxygen, suction); educates/assists in various procedures covering information previously supplied by the provider or nurse. Reports and removes safety hazards; utilizes correct moving and transferring techniques according to Safe Patient Handling and appropriate body mechanics. Monitors appetites and food intake of inpatients/residents and obtains/records weights as needed. Work Schedule: Monday through Friday, 8 AM to 4:30 PM (can possibly change based on needs of the facility) Position Description Title/PD#: Lead Health Aid/PDCV19 - 99854A Physical Requirements: Duties require extensive periods of standing and walking. Working with residents requires regular and recurring bending, lifting (not to exceed 35 pounds), reaching, carrying, stooping, stretching and similar activities. Work Environment: Care duties are performed in an inpatient/resident-centered environment requiring normal safety precautions. Due to the essential functions of the job, the employee may be exposed to infectious waste, disease, odors, and other situations associated with health care, including but not limited to, HIV/AIDS, Hepatitis B, MRSA, and VRE. Universal precautions are followed at all times. While if completing kitchen responsibilities may be exposed to temperatures of refrigerators/freezers and ovens as well as wet floors.
